Born in New York City, he studied law before pursuing art, traveling to Europe and studying under Thomas Couture. La Farge became a pioneer in American stained glass, developing opalescent glass techniques that influenced Louis Comfort Tiffany. His work includes religious murals, landscapes, and book illustrations, often infused with symbolism and rich color. A key figure in the American Aesthetic Movement, La Farge also wrote extensively on art and culture. His creativity and technical innovations left a lasting artistic legacy.
